Every body knows that milk is packed with essential nutrients, but did you know that there are 13? When you put these 13 nutrients together you get natures most perfect beverage! However, other dairy products are also packed with these nutrients too, like cheese and yogurt! You should have at least 3 servings of dairy every single day, and you can get that by consuming these delicious and nutritious dairy foods! Sustainable Saturdays - Manure👩‍🌾 Each Sa Sustainable Saturdays - Manure👩‍🌾 Each Saturday in the month of June for National Dairy Month I will be sharing information about how dairy farmers sustain and care for the environment! Today’s topic is manure! By implementing manure recycling practices, farms can minimize waste, protect soil and water resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve overall sustainability. It represents a closed-loop system where nutrients are efficiently managed, reducing the reliance on external inputs and promoting long-term agricultural viability. 1. Nutrient cycling: Manure contains valuable nutrients that can be recycled back into the soil. By applying manure to fields, farmers can replenish the nutrient content of the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. This reduces the reliance on non-renewable resources and minimizes the environmental impacts associated with fertilizer production, such as energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. 2. Soil health and fertility: Manure is rich in organic matter, which improves soil structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient retention. By recycling manure, farmers can enhance soil health and fertility, leading to better crop yields and reducing the need for soil amendments. Healthy soils also contribute to long-term agricultural sustainability by supporting diverse soil organisms and promoting ecosystem resilience. 3. Cost savings and economic benefits: Recycling manure can lead to cost savings for farmers. By utilizing manure as a natural fertilizer, farmers can reduce their dependence on synthetic fertilizers, which can be expensive. Additionally, on-farm biogas production can provide an additional revenue stream through the sale of renewable energy or by participating in incentive programs and carbon credit markets. This past weekend I was able to attend the Pittsbu This past weekend I was able to attend the Pittsburgh marathon along with: 👑Elise Ely from Allegheny County 👑Carlie Knott from Somerset County 👑Morgan Larson from Erie County 👑Kendall Craft from Crawford County We had an amazing time and were able to promote in the heart of Pittsburgh! Together we utilized a few of our promotional items such as a spinner wheel and corn hole board where we asked people dairy-related questions. Yesterday 42 participants completed the 2nd annual Yesterday 42 participants completed the 2nd annual Moovin’ for Milk 5K hosted by Wasson Farm, Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Promotion Services Inc, and Feeding Pennsylvania. $1200.00 were raised to benefit Fill a Glass with Hope® charitable milk program. In addition to the $1200 raised by the event, Northwest Bank also donated an additional $1000.00 to Fill a Glass with Hope® directly. Runners were able to refuel with chocolate milk, smoothies and cheese sticks after the race as well. Only ONE WEEK until the 2nd Annual Moovin’ for M Only ONE WEEK until the 2nd Annual Moovin’ for Milk 5k Walk/Run! The race will take place on Saturday, April 27th at Wasson Farm Market in State College. Pennsylvania Dairy Princess and Promotion Services, Inc. and @feedingpa have partnered to host the 2nd Annual Moovin’ for Milk 5k Walk/Run; 100% of the proceeds from this event will directly benefit the Fill a Glass with Hope® charitable milk program. Fill a Glass with Hope is a partnership formed among Feeding Pennsylvania and their member food banks, the @padairymens and @americandairyne that raises funds to enable our member food banks to purchase fresh milk directly from local dairies to benefit our neighbors facing hunger.
